Friday, December 9, 2005.  We are heading north to Carlsbad Caverns, and I want to stay in the park.  We have been staying in elevations of 5,000 feet + and it is so cold at night especially when you are in a trailer and it is below freezing outside.  Yea, yea, I know I sound like I am complaining but thank God we are heading west, to warmer climates.
We are at an RV Park at White City, just seven miles from Carlsbad Caverns and then on Saturday after we view Carlsbad Caverns, we will go to Roswell, N.M., Denis wants to see where the aliens crashed and the UFO museum.  This should be fun..

A formation in "The Big Room" at the Carlsbad Caverns.  This room was over 1000 feet of different formations.  They still have undiscovered caves there.  There is a huge bat population also but they had already migrated south in October, apparently it is something to see.

They really milk the alien theme for all it's worth.  Most stores in the area and coffee shops, paintings, everything is relating to aliens. It is actually quite funny.

We went to Roswell's International UFO Museum & research Center hoping to find proof the aliens had landed in 1947 since we grew up hearing about this all our lives we wanted first had information.  We were disappointed.  There was no true artefacts only hearsays no evidence plus some discrepancies.
Except for the two aliens above, there is nothing else to report.

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, just south of Alamogordo, N.M.  We are at the base of this mountain.  Really nice site with all the hydro/water, tails, and views. They also have a really nice cactus display.  I love it.

This is Denis's feet coming back to earth after being abducted by the aliens in Roswell.

These are the snow banks we got last night!
What do you think of it?. Actually this is White Sands National Monument where there are waves of dunes made from gypsum sands. Yes, this is the stuff that Gyprock is made from and it's so white that it looks like snow.

This is the view from a few hundred feet up the mountain behind the campsite.
To the left of the picture is the White Sands Missile range and the city of Las Cruces. Behind Denis is Holloman Air force base, a huge military airfield, more white sands, and to the right of the picture, you can't see it, is heading towards the Trinity Site, the site of the first Atomic bomb test and city of Alamogordo, 12 miles.

Below Denis, is our campground and this Park is located at Dog Canyon", in the Guadalupe Mountain range. Here used to live a "Frenchman" in the late 1800's, Jean Rochas, his Adobe house remains are to the bottom right of picture. He is also suspected to be the one who built the self supporting circular stairs at a monastery in Santa Fe that, to this day still amaze visitors.

Phelps Dodge Santa Rita Chino Mines open pit mine. It is 1,500 feet deep and one and one half miles across, this is the oldest active copper mine in the Southwest.  It became an open-pit mine in 1910.  It is so big that it has it's own atmosphere.  See the fog above the road.

We were driving by this subdivision in Deming and I fell in love with this home.  While taking a picture of it a vehicle opened it's window and the person in the car asked "do you like my home?".  I told her how much I liked it and she invited us to come in and see her new home of 1 year.  It is a beautiful home.  Thank you, Ada, for inviting us in.

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.  The cliff dwellings date to the late 1200s.  Seven natural caves occur high in the southeast-facing cliff of a side canyon, and five of the caves contain the ruins of dwelling-a total of about 40 rooms.  Walls were constructed of stone with most of the timbers in the dwellings are the originals.  Tree-ring dates obtained from these timbers range through the late 1270s and 1280s.  The visitors centre holds all sorts of artefacts from the people of that age.  We were very impressed.  We had a very informative guide, his opinion was that these structures were a place of worship.
